It is a question that comes up often when booking a package with more than one service: should I use the sauna before the massage or after it? The short answer: before, in most cases.
Why Before the Massage?
Heat relaxes the muscles and stimulates circulation, so the body is ready for massage and the session is more comfortable and effective. Going into a sauna after an oil massage is also uncomfortable for the skin.
Sauna vs Steam Room
- Sauna: dry heat in a wooden room, with a higher temperature and low humidity.
- Steam room: moist heat at a lower temperature with high humidity, which some people find easier to breathe in.
- Both help open the pores and relax the muscles, and choosing between them is a matter of personal preference.
How Long Should You Stay?
Ten to fifteen minutes is enough, especially for first-timers. Leave straight away if you feel dizzy or short of breath, and drink water before going in and after coming out.
The Ideal Order for a Full Package
- Sauna or steam first.
- Then the Moroccan or Turkish bath, if it is part of the package.
- Then the jacuzzi to unwind.
- And finally the massage.
What About the Jacuzzi?
The jacuzzi complements the sauna and steam: warm water and bubbles that gently massage the muscles. You can use it after the sauna and before the massage, ideally for no more than 15 to 20 minutes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Staying in the sauna a long time in the belief that more is better.
- Going in on a full stomach or without drinking water.
- Moving straight from high heat to physical effort.
- Ignoring dizziness or fatigue.
Who Should Avoid Them?
People with heart or blood pressure conditions, pregnant women, and anyone with a fever or dehydration should check with a doctor before using a sauna or steam room.
