If you have never had a massage before, it is natural to have questions. This guide walks you through what happens step by step, so you go into your first session feeling at ease.
Before the Session
- Book ahead on WhatsApp and tell us if it is your first time.
- Avoid heavy meals for at least an hour before the session.
- Arrive a few minutes early so you can start calmly.
- Tell your therapist about any injury, pain or health condition.
During the Session
Your therapist will ask where you feel tension and how much pressure you prefer. The session takes place in a quiet private room, and you stay covered with a towel throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered. If the pressure feels too strong or too light, say so straight away; the session is adjusted to your comfort.
Which Type Should I Choose the First Time?
We usually recommend Swedish massage for a first session because it is calm and uses moderate pressure. After that you can try other types. Learn about them in our article on types of massage.
After the Session
- Drink enough water.
- You may feel a little sleepy, or have mild muscle soreness the next day, which is normal after a deep massage.
- Avoid strenuous effort for the remainder of the day if you can.
How Long Does the Whole Visit Take?
Count the session itself plus about fifteen minutes before it for reception and changing, and the same afterwards to get going again calmly. So for a 60-minute session, set aside about an hour and a half.
Getting the Most From Your First Session
- Decide your goal before you go in: relaxation, or relief in a particular area.
- Switch your phone off or to silent.
- Breathe slowly and deeply during the session; it helps the muscles release.
- Afterwards, tell us what you thought so we can tailor your next session.
Questions People Are Shy to Ask
There is no embarrassing question. You can ask to avoid a particular area, change the music or room temperature, or stop the session at any time. The aim is for you to leave feeling comfortable.
