There is no single number that suits everyone. The right frequency depends on your goal, the nature of your work, and how much tension or fatigue you feel. But there are general guidelines that help you work out what suits you.
For Relaxation and Everyday Stress
A session every two to four weeks is enough for most people to keep that feeling of ease and sleep better.
For Muscle Tension or Pain From Sitting
You may need a weekly session for a few weeks at first, then drop to one every two weeks as things improve. More detail in our article on massage for back and neck pain.
For People Who Exercise Regularly
A sports or deep tissue session every one to two weeks helps the muscles recover, especially during periods of intense training.
Signs You Are Due a Session
- Stiffness in the neck or shoulders when you wake up.
- Frequent tension-related headaches.
- Trouble sleeping or a constant feeling of fatigue.
- Heavy legs after a long day.
One Long Session or Shorter, More Frequent Ones?
For general relaxation, a full session of 60 to 90 minutes at longer intervals works well. For tension in a specific area, shorter and closer sessions that focus on that area are usually more useful than one long session every couple of months.
How to Make the Effect Last Longer
- Drink enough water through the day.
- Move and stretch regularly, especially if you have a desk job.
- Sleep well; sleep is part of muscle recovery.
- Add a sauna or jacuzzi before your massage when you can.
Can Too Much Massage Be Harmful?
Light massage can be repeated often without a problem. Deep tissue massage needs a day or two of rest afterwards, so it is not recommended daily. And if pain is persistent or severe, it is better to see a doctor.
